What's New

  • The 18th D'Atri Memorial Lectures have been announced. The lectures will be presented by Sun-Yung Alice Chang, Princeton University, February 17 & 21, 2012.
  • Liping Liu, our recent joint hire with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is one of 48 scientists and engineers who have been selected by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research to receive a Young Investigator Award.
  • Richard Lyons is one of the recipients of the 2012 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition. Richard shares the prize with Michael Aschbacher, Stephen Smith and Ronald Solomon. This brings the number of Steele Prize awards made to current and former members of our department to at least eight, since, in addition to the six mentioned below, Danny Gorenstein also received the Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition in 1989.
  • Joel Lebowitz will receive an Honorary Doctorate from Syracuse University at its 158th Commencement on May 13, 2012. The citation, among other things, specifically mentions Joel's development of the semi-annual "Rutgers Meetings".
  • Saharon Shelah is one of two recepients of the 2011 Emet Prize in The Exact Sciences, a major prize awarded by the A.M.N. Foundation and the Israeli Government.
  • Henryk Iwaniec was awarded the 2011 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans. Previous Rutgers faculty recipients of Steele Prizes include Israil Gelfand, Martin Kruskal, Endre Szemeredi, Francois Treves, and Doron Zeilberger.
  • The long awaited NRC assessment of research doctorate programs has been released. The NRC study recognizes the excellence of our program, but unlike the previous 1995 assessment the current one does not provide a single rating, and therefore does not immediately give the basis for a linear ordering of programs. Rather the result for each program is a range of ratings. For more information about our ratings and the methodology of the assessment please visit our NRC Study page.
